B.C. Blue captures gold medal in Winnipeg

July 20, 2008

Team British Columbia Blue defeated Team British Columbia White 2-1 in penalty strokes in the gold medal match at the U19 Women’s National Championship in Winnipeg.

Neelam Kumar opened the scoring in the first half to put the White side up 1-0. Jackie Trautman’s goal midway through the second half sent the game into extra time. However the game needed a penalty stroke competition to ultimately crown B.C. Blue as national champions for 2008.

The win gives the province of British Columbia the gold medal in the 2008 Senior Men’s, Senior Women’s, and U19 Women’s events. B.C. also has the silver medal in the Senior Women’s, and U19 Women’s tournaments.

Team Ontario Red defeated the B.C. Under-16 team 7-2 in the bronze medal match earlier in the day.

British Columbia will host the U19 Men’s National Championship 25-27 July in Vancouver.
