BC Blue wins women’s national championship

July 26, 2009

BC Blue defeated Ontario Red 2-1 Sunday afternoon to capture the 2009 Senior Women’s National Championship of field hockey.  It is the province’s second consecutive gold medal after winning in 2008.

Katie Rushton scored the game winner for the winning side.  Other goal scorers include Stephanie Nesbitt of BC and Krissy Wishart of Ontario.

Earlier in the day BC White defeated BC U18 Blue 0-0 (4-2) on penalty strokes to claim the bronze medal.  Goaltenders Sydney Kolysher and Bea Francisco of U18 Blue played excellent, as did BC White substitute goaltender Kaelan Watson.

Alberta South defeated BC U18 White 1-1 (3-1) on penalty strokes for fifth-place while Ontario White beat Alberta North 3-2 in overtime to claim seventh.

On Saturday afternoon Prince Edward Island defeated Manitoba 1-1 (3-2) on penalty strokes for ninth place.

The 2009 FHC National Championships took place July 21 – 26 from Hawkings Field in Calgary.  Field Hockey Alberta were the hosts.
