Belgium defeats Canada in World Cup Qualifier opener

March 26, 2010

After the Belgium and Canadian national anthems, the ATAholding Women’s Hockey World Cup Qualifier began. Belgium started off on the attack and after a missed shot was awarded the first penalty corner in the opening minutes of the match; that went wide right.

Behind the strong defensive play of Canada’s Ali Lee, Stephanie Jameson, and vocal keeper Azelia Liu, Canada battled for possession. Yet, Belgium’s attack, led by Charlotte De Vos continued to pressure. As play continued, both teams struggled to break out of the midfield and Canada tried to get into their attacking third; also failing to capitalize off a Belgian yellow card awarded to Lola Danhaive in the 14th minute.

Later in the first half, Belgium’s Jill Boon had a shot blocked and Belgium came back on attack until Canada’s Anna Kozniuk broke up play. Fast Belgium runs down the sides continued, but resulted in no shot opportunities. Belgium had another good opportunity to score on a near breakaway, but Morgane Vouche could not get the shot off. Canada’s defense remained firm and at the end of the half, the match remained scoreless.

The second half of the match started with Canada on the attack. Belgium’s defense stifled Canada’s attackers Katherine Gillis and Robyn Pendleton. Belgium persisted and took possession. Finally, Belgium broke the scoreless match on a field goal by Anouk Raes in the 52nd minute. Six minutes later, continuing strong on attack, Jill Boon gave Belgium a 2-0 lead off a penalty corner. In the final minutes, Belgium’s Anne-Sophie Van Regemortel was awarded a yellow card, but Canada was unable to take advantage; and Belgium took the 2-0 win.
