Canada comes from behind to draw Ireland

January 13, 2009

The Canadian women’s national field hockey team tied Ireland "A" 2-2 in their second exhibition match in as many days. The Canadians competed much harder in today’s game after dropping a 2-0 decision on Monday. A number of strong attacks were created up the right hand side but despite generating numerous 25-yard penetrations Canada was unable to capitalize on their early possession.
In the 17th minute Ireland was awarded a penalty corner but Meggan Oliver (Vancouver, BC) made a solid stick save on the post. Shortly thereafter the Irish earned a second penalty corner, this time converting on a hard shot that deflected off a Canadian defender and high into the net. The rest of the first half saw back and forth action, but the Irish were the team able to make good of their chances as they scored a free play goal in the 28th minute.

At the beginning of the second half the Irish increased their pressure, but the Canadians were able to withstand the attack. Canada found their bearings again and started to transfer the ball more effectively, but had trouble generating outcomes in the circle. Then in the 63rd minute Jess Walkey (Rockwood, ON) created a turnover in the Irish circle and found a streaking Thea Culley (Vancouver, BC) who slammed home a bouncing ball to put the Canadians on the board.

This goal really energized both teams and the pace became frantic for the next couple of minutes. Then in the 65th minute Canada generated their first penalty corner of the game, and Steph Jameson (Vancouver, BC) blasted home a direct shot from the top of the circle to even the score at 2-2.

The Canadians now have a couple of days of training before their next game against the Irish senior team on Friday.
