Canada (2) – Chile (0)
With a cheering squad from the Canadian consulate present and a chance to take back the series, the Women’s national team had everything they needed to come out fighting hard for a win. Following the game plan, the team pressured the Chilean defense well; stepping up and playing smart hockey. With an early burst of energy and intensity, the team was able to capitalize on what originated as a break down short corner and ended in a great diagonal ball hit by defender Stephanie Jameson (BC) to a waiting Thea Culley (BC) who was able to work her magic to smash the ball into the back of the net.
With the Canadians taking credit for most of the ball possession in the first half, momentum was bound to pour into the final 35 minutes of the game. The Canadians outnumbered the Chileans in attacking penalty corners in the second half with one shot just wide of the post and another effortlessly deflected just over the net by forward Robyn Pendleton (BC). The sealing 2-0 win came 42 minutes into the game when another long ball from defender Samantha Smith (BC) was tipped through for Robyn Pendleton who was able to beat the last defender and blast the ball low and hard past the Chilean goal keeper.
Head coach Louis Mendonca, pleased with tonight’s outcome, commented that "the girls executed the game plan well and played with a lot of passion!" The team regroups for their final match tomorrow evening against Chile, excited to bring home another win to tie up the series before heading to Argentina.
