The Canadian national women’s field hockey team defeated Team Mexico 10-1 Sunday morning in their final match of the Pan American Cup in Bermuda. Canada finishes the nine-day continental qualifier for the World Cup in fifth place.

“We came out hard today to prove that our fifth place finish doesn’t reflect what we are capable of,” said Canadian player Thea Culley of Rossland, British Columbia.

Teams finishing second through sixth will be invited to one of three last-chance World Cup qualifying tournaments in 2010. The tournament winner automatically qualifies.

Canada dominated play from start to finish led by a four-goal performance from Culley. Katie Baker, Cailie O’Hara, Natalie Wise, Shannon Elmitt (two goals), and Jessalyn Walkey also scored for Canada.

The goals were the first of their international careers for Wise and Elmitt.
