The Canadian men’s field hockey team upset top-ranked Argentina 4-3 in overtime Saturday afternoon in the semi-finals of the Pan American Cup in Santiago, Chile. Canada faces the United States on Sunday afternoon with the winner qualifying for the 2010 World Cup of Hockey.
Connor Grimes of Duncan, British Columbia scored the game winner 10 minutes into extra time.
Argentina led 3-2 with less than three minutes remaining in regulation when Surrey, British Columbia’s Gabbar Singh scored on a penalty corner to send the game to overtime.
Argentina, ranked 9th in the world and first in the Americas, was the favourite to win the tournament.
Canada’s Mark Pearson and Ranjeev Deol scored the other goals for the winning side.
Canada last upset the powerhouse Argentines at the 2007 Pan American Games to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.
