Canada wins on Day 4 in San Diego

March 31, 2010

From FIH

The second match on a windy day four of the ATAHolding Qualifer was between Mexico and Canada. Canada took the early 1-0 lead over Mexico as Robyn Pendleton pushed one past Mexico’s keeper in the 7th minute. Mexico countered with one of their own, to tie the match, seven minutes later, off a field goal by Francisca Adriana Figueroa Valdez.

Off a penalty corner goal in the 23rd minute by Stephanie Jameson, Canada regained the lead. Both teams fought for possession, with Canada having the slight edge over control of the match. With neither team able to get off another score, the halftime score was Mexico 1, Canada 2.

The second half started with Mexico being awarded a couple penalty corners, but could not capitalize. Like first half, both teams fought for possession and control of the match; that included lots of midfield play. In the 53rd minute, Thea Culley gave Canada a two goal advantage over Mexico. Mexico persisted, yet could not get past Canada’s backfield. Canada had their own offensive run and Katherine Gillis scored off a penalty corner in the 63rd minute of play give Canada the 4-1 lead and win over Mexico.
