Identification Camp for Women’s Indoor Pan Am Cup

March 25, 2010

Field Hockey Canada will be holding a national identification camp May 7 – 9 in Toronto for the Women’s Indoor Pan American Cup team.

Please review the following information.   It highlights details regarding the opportunity to play on the Canadian Women’s Indoor Team.  Field Hockey Canada, its board and the National Coach Louis Mendonca support this program.   The team is bound by the policy and the direction of the FHC Board and the National coach.    Please note FHC is not able to fund this program.


Eligibility:

  • Member of FHC and your PSO
  • Female and born 1994 or earlier
  • Excellent Indoor Skills
  • Ability to commit to program both in terms of time and funds
  • Ability to centralize in Toronto
  • Canadian Citizen

 

Indoor Pan American Cup, Barquisimeto, Venezuela

  • Qualifier for the Indoor World Cup Poznan Poland, Feb 8 – 13, 2011
  • Winner advances to World Cup
  • Leave Toronto August 8 and return August 15, 2010


Funding

  • 100% funded by participating athletes
  • Fundraising will done both individually and as a team
  • The proceeds of all team fund raising activities will be distributed equally among the athletes
  • The “Adopt an Athlete” program with tax receipts is available to athletes named to this team

 

Process:

  • Interested players attend camp May 7 – 9th in Toronto
  • Athletes assessed by established criteria – please see assessment table attached
  • A Maximum of 25 athletes will be asked to join the squad
  • Squad will take part in test series with Australia May 14 – 15 in Toronto
  • Team (10 court players and 2 goal keepers, plus  4 reserves) named on June 11
  • Reserves will not travel with team to Venezuela
  • Team practices in Toronto minimum twice weekly until team leaves for Venezuela August 8


Players Currently Out of Country:

  • Must attend camp at their own cost
  • Must be in Toronto for August 8th  departure
  • Proof of fitness levels must be provided
  • Each athlete’s situation will be assessed independently
  • Will be expected to train and tour with squad if Canada qualifies for World Cup


National Team (outdoor) Athletes

  • Expected to attend camp in May and test series against Australia
  • Efforts will be made by staff and Toronto team to find billets for players
  • Responsible for own travel and accommodation to camp
  • Budget for team covers half the fare for flight to join team in Toronto


Levies

  • Camp $200
  • Expected levy $5000.  Amount could vary with success of fundraising

Canadian Indoor Women’s Team ID Camp Schedule

Friday May 7

  • 5:30 pm        Report for registration and check in
  • 6pm – 10 pm        Drills and Fitness testing


Saturday May 8

  • 10am – noon        Drills and inter-squad games
  • 3 pm – 5 pm        Penalty Corners and inter-squad games


Sunday May 9   

  • 8 am – noon        Inter-squad Games
  • 2pm – 5 pm        Inter-squad Games


  

                                                                                                              

 

 Assessment Criteria -Court Players:

  Technical:    

  • Ball speed while executing the skill of pushing a ball.
  • Dribble and maintain possession at speed.
  • Dribble and pass at speed accurately.
  • Receive a ball at speed and control/trap with first touch consistently.
  • Ability to use the boards.
  • One touch passing.

 

Tactical – Game play: (Evaluation is based on Individual Play and as it applies with other players)

  • Passing and receiving under pressure.
  • Maintain possession under pressure.
  • 1 Vs 1, 2 Vs 1, 3 Vs 2.
  • Off ball running.
  • Indoor tackling.
  • Shooting.
  • Marking – zone, man to man (full court or half court).
  • Understanding tactical possession ability to execute set plays.

Evaluation – Goalkeepers:

Quickness and recovery

Skills

  • Kick/clear ball consistently on the ground – equally with left and right leg
  • Kick/clear ball and control direction – equally with left and right leg
  • Lateral movement and clear – equally with left and right leg
  • Ability to save/clear aerial balls
  • Ability to recover after initial saves for rebounds
  • Lateral movement, agility and covering angles as ball carrier adjusts position and shoots from various angles – important not to give a second chance
