Men’s Jr. Team USA Test Series Blog: 5

November 15, 2010

We woke up at 7:45 for our first pre-game morning jog.

Preparing for our first match against the USA was totally necessary as none of us wanted to start off the series with a loss. We had our Holiday Inn’s signature breakfast, complete with bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, and the key to our success, those perfect cinnamon rolls. Continuing with our pre-game preparation, Coach Aaron presented our game plan complete with chalk board diagrams and video clips – which I found very informative.

Once the team arrived at the pitch, all of our heads were set to focusing on the task at hand – winning our first match against the USA squad on their home field. With this in mind we complete a well structured warm-up lead by our captain Taylor Curran and co-captain James Kirkpatrick.

We started the match with deafening yell “CANADA”, that was so loud the American athletes turned to see who they are up against.

Our starting eleven stepped on the field and kept the score even until yours truly was subbed on to give Canada our first goal of the series. I made a run behind the US backline and Taylor Curran handed me a brilliant ball from the midfield. As I entered the ‘D’ I had two options: pass to Mikey on the far post or take the glory myself. The USA keeper made the decision for me when he cheated to the far post. All I had to do was slip it short side.

In the second half we scored one more goal, which put us at two goals to none. Tyler Clank executed his part of the short corner play perfectly by tipping the ball past the keepers left kicker.

The game ended with two goals for Canada and nil for the USA. What a great way to start the series with a goal and a win.
