Team Ontario Red eliminated a potential podium sweep by British Columbia at the U19 Women’s National Championship in Winnipeg with a dominating 7-2 victory over B.C. U16 Sunday afternoon. B.C. Blue will face B.C. White for the gold medal later today.
A hat trick within a six minute span by Ontario’s Jessalyn Walkey was enough to secure the victory for her team.
B.C. U16 opened the game’s scoring in the 3rd minute by nationally carded athlete Shannon Elmitt. However it was all Ontario from there. Goals from Anna Easty, Jocelyn Mitchell, and two from Brienne Stairs rounded out the scoring from the Red side.
Shannon Herold scored B.C.’s other goal in the 60th minute.
Ontario Red are settling for bronze this year after winning gold at the 2007 Under-19 National Championship in Toronto.
