Ontario wins Senior Men’s Championship

July 24, 2009

Team Ontario captured the men’s national championship of field hockey in stunning fashion with a 3-2 comeback victory over BC Blue Friday afternoon in Calgary, Alberta.  The Ontarians scored two goals in the final two minutes of the game to win their first gold medal since 2007.

With BC leading 2-1 entering the 68th minute Ontario was awarded a penalty stroke that was converted by Adam Ali.  Sean Barretto then scored the game winner past BC goaltender Antoni Kindler with only a few seconds remaining in regulation.

BC Blue opened the game’s scoring in the 26th minute with a penalty corner goal from Ben Martin.  Mark Pearson scored three minutes later to give the British Columbians a 2-0 lead entering the second half.

Keegan Pereira scored Ontario’s other goal on a field play in the 39th minute.

The game was the only match of this year’s men’s tournament where no cards were given.
