The Canadian Men’s Target 2017 Team began its international odyssey today in Moorpark, California with a convincing 5-1 win over hosts USA. The first 15 minutes were played at a frenetic pace with both teams displaying incredible energy and excitement. USA threatened first 5 minutes in winning a corner but Iqwinder Gill turned aside the low shot. Canada settled down and began to control the game with short passing – driving the US defense back into their own end. Canada’s determination paid off with a goal at the 15 minute mark from Ollie Ewasechko. Another goal from a corner just before half made it 2-0 Canada.
The second half began with more deliberate play from Canada but forwards continued to put the USA defense on their heels with tremendous pressure with their forechecking forcing turnovers for their teammates in the midfield. Two more goals resulted making it 4-0 for Canada before the USA was able to respond. Canada added one more late before the rain started coming down hard.
“The boys did a fantastic job in this first match and deserved the win. The score reflected the dominance of our team today,” said Head Coach Mathias Ahrens.
