University of Alberta cuts field hockey program

March 6, 2012 | Field Hockey Canada | fieldhockey.ca

On Thursday, March 1 the University of Alberta (U of A) Athletics Department unexpectedly announced their decision to withdraw the Pandas’ Field Hockey Program from the Canadian Intervarsity Sport (CIS) and the Canada West University Athletics Association (CWUAA), effective immediately.  They have also cut all program funding.  Click here to view the U of A statement.

Field Hockey Canada (FHC) is committed to supporting and promoting field hockey at every level throughout Canada.  FHC is currently working with the Canadian field hockey community to understand this decision and identify and support options going forward in Alberta.

The CIS is a key partner within the development and competition structure of field hockey in Canada.  While the CWUAA now has three field hockey teams, this does not automatically eliminate field hockey from Canada West or CIS competition.
