Carassco Polo Club – Montevideo, Uruguay
Canada had a tentative start against their Uruguayan counterparts. The
excitement and nervousness of playing their first international match was
evident by the Canadian play on the field. Uruguay took advantage of their home
turf and scored two unstructured field goals in the 11th and 16th minutes to
take the lead. Canada slowly ´found their footing´and began to play with more
confidence in the last part of the 25 minute half.
After a firm and informative half time talk by Head Coach, Robin DÁbreo, the
Canadian girls started the second half with a more determined effort. The young
Canadian team stormed back, and on a penalty corner Alex McCawley scored her
first international goal, in the 33 minute. The entire team was thrilled, and
didn´t really know how to react. Luckily, they reacted in the best way
possible, when Emma Plasteras scored to finish an exquisite four person passing
sequence, in the 38th minute. Canada took the lead in the 47th minute with Alex
McCawley finding the back of the net once more, with a field goal.
Unfortunately, Canada was unable to hold the lead and Uruguay was able to tie
the score, in the 49th minute with a penalty corner goal. The 60 minute game
ended in a 3 – 3 score.
Many lessons were learned, and there was much to discuss and work on to ready
the team for their next exhibition match against Chile on Thursday, March
11.
