Field Hockey Canada and national team head coach Louis Mendonca today announced the women’s national high performance program will hold a selection camp from November 10 – 14, 2009 in Vancouver, British Columbia.  The intent of the camp is to identify the athletes who will be competing for Canada at an upcoming preparation event and the World Cup Qualifier to take place in early 2010.

The camp will be held at Wright Field on the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver.

“Only a few positions on the team are secure,” said coach Mendonca.  “I’m hoping the athletes come prepared to work hard and earn a spot for themselves.  Healthy internal competition usually translates into team success.”

The ongoing transition period of the women’s program over the last 18 months has seen several new athletes awarded the opportunity to compete for Canada at the international level.  The camp will provide a chance for national coaches to get a closer look at these athletes as well as those still aiming to make the team.

Those players attending the camp have already been notified of their invitation.  Players invited were selected due to their identification by FHC coaching staff as having the potential to make the national team or because they are currently a carded athlete with the Athlete Assistance Program.

The locations of both the preparation event and World Cup Qualifier will be announced on the FHC website as information becomes available.
