Les Dinos de l’Université de Calgary se sont approchées un peu plus d’une première participation à vie à la finale canadienne grâce à une convaincante victoire de 3-0 aux dépens des Varsity Blues de Toronto dans le septième match de la ronde préliminaire du championnat féminin de hockey sur gazon de SIC-HGC, vendredi soir.<\/p>\n

Après deux jours de compétition, Calgary occupe le deuxième rang du classement provisoire grâce à un dossier de 2-1, derrière UBC (3-0) mais devant Guelph (1-2), Toronto (1-2) et l’Alberta (1-2).<\/p>\n

Les Dinos, qui disputent le tournoi sur leur propre terrain et qui en sont à une première présence au championnat national depuis 1997, concluent le tour préliminaire avec un duel face à l’Alberta samedi à 10h (heure des Rocheuses). Leur meilleur résultat au tournoi de SIC est une quatrième position (1982, 1987).<\/p>\n

De leur côté, les Varsity Blues, couronnées pour la 11e<\/sup> fois de leur histoire l’an dernier et semées premières favorites à l’aube du tournoi de cette semaine, ont besoin d’aide pour passer à la finale de dimanche et ainsi avoir la chance de défendre la coupe McCrae. Toronto dispute son dernier match préliminaire samedi à 16h, également contre l’Alberta. <\/p>\n

Des buts dans les premiers instants des deux demies ont fait la différence vendredi soir entre les Dinos et les Blues.<\/p>\n

Après seulement trois minutes de jeu, Keara Chiquen a inscrit son deuxième du tournoi pour procurer à Calgary une avance rapide de 1-0.<\/p>\n

« C’est une partie importante de notre stratégie. Nous forçons toujours la note dans les premières minutes, a expliqué l’entraîneure-chef des Dinos, Jenn Swagar. Si nous réussissons à marquer, cela nous donne une énergie incroyable. »<\/p>\n

Après une première demie très partagée, Calgary a entamé la deuxième période de la même façon que la première, Michelle Roydhouse trouvant le fond du filet dès la première minute.<\/p>\n

La foule locale n’a pas eu à attendre longtemps avant de célébrer à nouveau. Six minutes après le but de Roydhouse, Kaitlyn Longworth a marqué son troisième de la compétition suite à une punition, mettant à toute fin pratique la rencontre hors de portée.<\/p>\n

Malgré le déficit au niveau du pointage, ce sont les Blues qui ont été les plus menaçantes en deuxième demie, mais elles se sont chaque fois butées à la gardienne Steph Petrowitsch, qui devait hériter du titre de joueuse du match pour les Dinos.<\/p>\n

« Steph a été sensationnelle, a dit Swagar. Elle a disputé son meilleur match de la saison. Sans elle, le pointage aurait été différent. »<\/p>\n
