How did you first get into umpiring?
I got in to umpiring because I loved everything about the game and wanted to support my local club.
Other field hockey background:
I have coached field hockey for 12 years across all ages, mostly at the grassroots level, but also dabbling in some high performance. My favourite player that I have coaches is my Mom! I grew up playing field hockey in Burnaby; went on to play with the varsity team at UBC; and now play Premier division in the VWFHA for the Meralomas club.
I am also the President & Founder of the Burnaby Bears Field Hockey Club where I share my playing, coaching & umpiring experience with my community.
Favourite umpiring memory:
Too many to count, but there is nothing like calling a beautiful goal by holding your whistle on an advantage when athletes are playing all out to get the ball in the net!
Advice for aspiring umpires?
The most important thing is making sure that you care about the game you are appointed to as much as the players, coaches and fans. Your excitement, engagement and integrity will build trust and rapport with those you share the field with. Thank you to all of the mentors and colleagues I have worked with in my umpiring career thus far. Your support, knowledge, kindness, and love for the game are beyond what anyone knows.

How did you first get into umpiring?
I began umpiring Youth League in Saskatchewan, as an opportunity to give back to the sport. It was also a good opportunity to make some money as a young high schooler. Once I moved to Victoria, BC to attend the University of Victoria, I was able to pursue umpiring at a higher level. After my Jr. National Team playing career was over, I began pursuing umpiring full time.
Other field hockey background:
I played at various U16, U18 and Senior Men’s National Championships for Alberta and Saskatchewan. I played on the varsity team at the University of Victoria competing in the men’s premier division in Vancouver. As well, I was a member of the Men’s Jr. National Team for 4 years.
Favourite umpiring memory:
My favourite umpiring memory would be my first match at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. The match was between Australia and South Africa in front of a sold out home-crowd. The atmosphere was incredible and will always stick with me.
My second favourite memory would be doing my first Senior Men’s international match between Russia and Trinidad and Tobago at World League Round 2 in Trinidad and Tobago. The feeling of doing my first international match will always be one of my best memories .
Advice for aspiring umpires?
The best advice I can give any young umpire is to continue to seek advice and ask questions. As umpires, you can never stop improving, regardless of how much experience you have. Young umpires will make plenty of mistakes, but how you respond and learn from these mistakes is very important. Continue to seek advice from more experienced umpires, and umpire managers. Stay humble and work hard.

How did you first get into umpiring?
I started playing hockey when I was 12. Umpiring followed a couple of years later when I figured out that I could earn a little bit of money doing it. Money is a great motivator for a teenager.
Other field hockey background:
I played hockey locally and regionally throughout high school and umpired the entire time. My first big tournament as an umpire was the BC Games in Victoria. After high school, I drifted away from hockey but rediscovered it during a university student exchange to Australia. When you live in a country where you know no one, sport is a great way to meet people. In Australia, my team needed someone to pick up our umpiring assignments so I volunteered (again, the little bit of play money was welcome). When I came back to BC, I started playing and umpiring again locally.
Favourite umpiring memory:
There are two umpiring memories that stick out for me…
Advice for aspiring umpires?
Trust your gut. It is frequently right. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. You will have bad games. Figure out what you can learn from the experience and then put it behind you. You don’t have to be a player to represent your country at the Olympics. Keep it simple… and have fun.
