Young umpires making an impact on world stage

Februay 24, 2010

Canada has the luxury of being home to some of the top field hockey umpires in the world.  28-year old Gavin Caldecott of Vancouver, having just returned from officiating in the Pan Am Youth Championship in Mexico, is looking to ensure Canada keeps this status for many years to come.

Caldecott was one of the seven umpires from the Pan American region selected to umpire at the event which serves as the men’s qualifier for the Youth Olympic Games.  29-year old Gillian Batey, of Victoria, will be representing Canadian umpires at the women’s qualifier in Uruguay next month.

“It is very important for our young Canadian umpires to have opportunities that enable them to pursue high levels of officiating,” said Paula Parks, Co-Chair of the FHC Officiating Committee.  “Tournaments such as the Youth Championships not only provide a quality international experience for the player but for the umpire as well.”

Caldecott worked his way up from umpiring in the local junior leagues of British Columbia to the Canadian national championships in just a few short years.  He also umpired in October’s 7 Test Super Series between the senior national teams of Canada and India.

“Going to these types of tournaments exposed me to better and more experienced umpires and certainly helped steepen the learning curve,” said the Vancouver native.  “It was an eye opener to see how different teams play a vastly different kind of hockey!”

Chris Wilson, one of Canada’s leading international umpires, is optimistic on Caldecott’s chances of having a very successful international career.  “He has good knowledge of the game and a nice calming appearance on the field which will help in communicating with the players.”

Batey umpired last June in the FIH-level event, Champions Challenge II in Russia.  In addition to the women’s Youth Championship she has also received an appointment to travel to Brazil for the 2010 South American Championships in April.

Although obtaining travel funding remains a significant obstacle in ensuring our young officials obtain the necessary experience to reach the next level, Canadians can be assured with talented young individuals such as Gillian and Gavin continuing to represent their country behind the whistle the future of our officiating looks bright.
