Field Hockey Canada Community Update

Special General Meeting delayed for further consultation.

As reported last month, Field Hockey Canada had planned an Special General Meeting (SGM) to be held at the end of May in which proposed amendments to the bylaws were to be considered. Field Hockey Canada consultations in the lead-up to the planned SGM led to the consensus that the meeting be delayed, enabling further consultation with Members. Instead of the planned SGM, the meeting pivoted to important discussions regarding the proposed revisions.

The process for the governance review, including bylaw amendments, is being led on behalf of the Board by the legal consultants at Sport Law Group (SLG). SLG led Members through the proposed revisions, and some key governance elements Members should consider. The conversation focused on whether the current bylaw structure gives all provincial sport organizations (PSOs), as the Members of Field Hockey Canada, an equitable voice. While proposed bylaw amendments were reviewed, and all Members recognized the need for change to a more ‘Canada strong’ structure, the shared view was that more consultation would be valuable to help align Members on the best path forward.

As a result, Field Hockey Canada and its Members will continue the review and dialogue with SLG, before bringing the amended bylaws back to a General Meeting forum at a later date.

For registered participants across the country, this is an important sign that the process is continuing in a thoughtful and constructive way. Independently led, the process supports Field Hockey Canada and its Members in the shared commitment to building a future-focused organization with best-in-class governance that supports fair representation, strong decision-making, and long-term participant confidence in the organization. Field Hockey Canada will continue to keep both Members and the broader community updated throughout the process.
