Canada played their second match at the FIH Champions Challenge 1 in South Africa on Sunday. The Men’s National Team lost a hard fought match to Pan American rivals, Argentina, who came from behind to clinch a narrow victory (as they recently did at the Pan American Games in October).
In the 20th minute, 18-year-old Gabriel Ho-Garcia scored the first goal of the match with a diving deflection – Ho-Garcia’s first goal for Canada. Argentina quickly responded with their own goal. Canada secured a 2 – 1 lead when Philip Wright smashed the ball under the Argentine goal keeper.
Soon after the second half began, Argentina evened the score on a penalty corner – and kept applying pressure. Canadian goal keeper David Carter made three superb saves to keep the score even… but Argentina managed to strike another goal going post side, putting them ahead 3 – 2. Canada earned two penalty corners in the final five minutes, but were unable to convert.
Canada next match at the Champions Challenge 1 is on Tuesday at 11:00am against Japan.
