Good morning, good afternoon, good evening,
I can officially say we’re all over our jet leg although I did see several members taking a few naps throughout the day. I’m not sure if it’s because of food comas or heat exhaustion but we’re all well rested and excited to get going.
Everyone in the village is friendly and tears were brought to my eyes when a fellow Canadian athlete responded to me, “yo, yo, yo” after I said hello. Most responses are good day and in very unique circumstances pip pip Cheerio but I loved the enthusiasm of this particular individual. The volunteers are simply spectacular and the positive energy is contagious. The streets are crawling with 71 different nationalities and Canadians have been standing out with their beautiful tartan pattered shorts and pants.
We had our first day off from training since we arrived here, a few of us remained in the village doing various things such as kick the soccer ball in a circle and don’t let it touch the ground. A form of juggling that many of the men had difficulty with when the women’s team participated. Not many guys made it very far in the earlier rounds, unlike the women who seemed to dominate. A couple overs of cricket were played followed by many wickets, most of those were the golden ducks, celebrated by all. The others who didn’t remain in the village caught a short train ride into the centre of Glasgow to do a little site seeing. This is where their true colours showed and had photos taken with anyone who asked. Ho-Garcia missed out on a few as he was the one being asked to take them. He’s got great spirit.
Guesty was the centre of attention today in our room, while he made several long phone calls to various hockey shops trying to purchase new shoes and have them delivered to the village. I couldn’t help but laugh ecstatically when I found out, that his shoes were the only ones that didn’t arrive. Don’t worry Guesty I’m sure you’ll have them by the end of the tournament.
A couple of the guys scheduled their salon appointment in the international village and I’m happy to report, they look sharp and ready to play. We have another match scheduled with Wales tomorrow morning, so stay tuned to hear that outcome.
Thanks for the continued support, we’re all so honoured to be representing Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Regards,
Iain
