Bonjour,
With this weeks blog post I bring you back to the city of Brussels, home to 4 Canadian boys; Mark and Scott who are playing for the Royal Racing Club of Brussels and Keegan and myself playing for Royal Wellington THC.
I don’t think it was a coincidence that I was assigned this week’s blog, the same week as the first clash between Racing and Wellington in the Belgian Honor Division.
Before I bring you up to date on the exciting matchup, I can inform you that there was some extremely below average trash talk going on in the week leading up to the match… I’ll spare you the details…
Surprisingly, Scott stayed out of the sophisticated trash talk, perhaps showing he was a little nervous about the game, or just could not be bothered to engage in such poor attempts at talking trash, I’m not sure.Whatever the case both sides spent the week preparing for the weekend, doing whatever possible to get three points from the derby.
The game started well for the Wellington boys, and we went up 2-0 in the first quarter. The game proved to be a well-contested matchup, and Racing got two goals back in the second quarter to make it 2-2.
However, just before half the Wellington boys regained the lead to make it 3-2. The second half of the game saw Racing get the majority of the chances and eventually they broke through in the last quarter to make it a 4-3 comeback win for Racing.
Although disappointing for Keegan and I, it was a good game and fun to pay against our Canadian teammates.
Wellington is yet to pick up its first 3 points with losses to Oree (5-2), Leopold (3-0), Dragons (5-0), Beerschot (3-2), and now Racing (4-3). Time to get that first W!
This weekend we were also lucky enough to have another Canadian (living in Antwerp) visit Brussels. His visit to Brussels was highlighted by the discovery of a potential new nickname for him.
A member of the Wellington girl’s team quite amusingly commented that his hair looked like a head of broccoli. Taylor “broccoli” Curran is what we called him for the rest of his stay.
Needless to say we enjoyed the visit from our shaggy haired friend.
Life in Brussels has been busy and very enjoyable. I’ve been spending my time coaching, training, in the gym, learning French and… moving from house to house.
A slight accommodation hiccup saw me living out of a suitcase for the first month, but I’m happy to say I’m now settled into my final place.
Thanks for reading,
“Commissioner” Gordon.
