Game two of the Canada-India series will always be special for nineteen year old Kelowna native, Danielle Hennig. The rookie made her debut not only for the Canadian national team but also on the forward line. Growing up, Hennig mostly played soccer and her athleticism and fitness transferred over to field hockey in grade 7 at Dr. Knox middle school and further at Kelowna Secondary school.

Hennig’s talents and leadership assisted her in co-captaining  her team to 2nd place at AAA provincials in her grade 12 year. Following her graduation, Hennig was recruited to the island to play as a midfielder for the University of Victoria Vikes. A starting midfielder in her rookie here, Hennig helped lead her team to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport National championship title and was she soon recruited to the Senior national team.

Hennig credits her commitment to hockey to her high school coaches (Brian Demug and Mr. B) as well as her family; including her parents and two brothers. Hennig has been training with the national team for the past year and is not looking back. Adaptable and flexible in her position on the field, this talented athlete shows a lot of promise in her future.

After receiving her first international cap Hennig stated, “It was really exciting to play for my country and it’s nice to have the first one under my belt. Now, I can just keep moving forward from there.”

Hennig and her team mates will have a rest day today but will look to keep improving their scoreline against India in the last two matches on Saturday at Tamanawis Park in Surrey and Sunday at UBC’s Wright Field.
