Canada’s Junior Men’s National Team wrapped up the group stage of the 2025 FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup with three losses but showed grit in each match. Competing in Pool A alongside Germany, Ireland, and South Africa, the Canadian squad showed off resilience and flashes of brilliance in one of the most competitive pools of the tournament.
While results didn’t favour Canada during the pool-stage, an emphasis is also placed on development and experience, aligning with Field Hockey Canada’s NextGen strategy. The Junior National Teams are performance development teams, focused on preparing athletes for Field Hockey Canada flagship senior national programs. These matches offered athletes a chance to adapt to elite-level speed and physical demands of international competition. At this point, many of these athletes have now been to two Junior Pan Ams as well as several competing in their second Junior World Cup. The Field Hockey Canada Young Bucks now move to the crossovers looking to shape the learning into points and results.

Canada’s consistent qualification for the Junior World Cup speaks volumes about the strength of the domestic junior pathway. After finishing second at the 2024 Junior Pan American Championship on home soil in Surrey, BC, this team earned its fifth consecutive berth at the World Cup, underlining a decade of progress in talent identification and development. The progress can already be seen, with many alumni transitioning successfully to Canada’s Men’s National Team over the past five years.
The crossover phase offers Canada another opportunity to test itself against top-tier opposition. Canada will open the crossovers in the 17-24 bracket against China and have an opportunity to finish as high as 17th at the tournament.
