Women’s Junior World Cup [2021]

The Junior Women’s National Team travelled to Potchefstroom, South Africa for the Junior World Cup, scheduled for Dec 5-17, 2021. The team arrived last week to train on site and prepare for the event. Due to the discovery of the Omicron COVID-19 variant in South Africa, the tournament has been postponed. Field Hockey Canada supports the FIH in their decision to postpone the event.

Due to the Omicron COVID-19 variant, most commercial flights in and out of the region have been suspended, leaving the athletes on the team and traveling staff without immediate transit home. The team is staying at the North-West University in Potchefstroom, where they are training on-field and spending time in their rooms, as they wait for the situation to resolve.

Team Canada earned the top spot out of the Pan Americas by winning the Junior Pan American Championships, defeating Chile, Argentina and Uruguay en route to a gold medal. Argentina had won seven of the previous eight iterations of this event, with USA winning one in 2008. This year’s win will go down in history as the first Canadian Junior Pan American gold for any Team Canada. This is also the first outdoor Pan American gold for any Canadian women’s program. The Junior World Cup will take place in Potchefstroom, South Africa from December 6 t0 December 16, 2021. Pan American rivals, Argentina, Uruguay and USA will all be in the field in Potchefstroom come December. Canada even has a date with Uruguay in pool play. See the schedule below; more information will be posted as the tournament nears.
