Field Hockey Canada is officially announcing Jenn Beagan as True Sport Manager. Her responsibilities include the integration of the True Sport principles across all programs at Field Hockey Canada, leading gender equity and inclusivity initiatives, as well as weaving Safe Sport values and guidelines into all development pathways.
Beagan is a familiar face in Canadian field hockey. She has worked with Field Hockey BC for many years, she has been a volunteer and professional coach, and she has chaired the Field Hockey Canada Coach Education Committee. Recently, her administrative work has been centred around developing the new and improved coach education and player development pathways.
Sport Canada has dedicated funding specifically towards Safe Sport and gender equity. Field Hockey Canada CEO, Susan Ahrens, said that Beagan is the perfect fit to spearhead this new position and set an example moving forward.
“It is our belief that both safe sport and gender equity should be interwoven into all we do, as it is a foundational part of the fabric of good sport,” Ahrens said. “In appointing Jenn as our True Sport Manager, this enables us to achieve that. Through this newly created position, we will ensure that our programs, our people and our culture purposefully strive to ensure field hockey at all levels is diverse, inclusive, equitable and safe. We are delighted to welcome Jenn to the FHC team.”
Beagan is originally from Calgary but has lived in Vancouver since she was a kid. She is a product of the Canadian field hockey system. She said she’s excited for the chance to take on this new role and is looking forward to the challenge.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for me and the whole organization. It’s a chance to grow the game right from the ground up and ensure diversity, equity and inclusion are at the forefront of the growth,” Beagan said.
Field hockey is in Beagan’s DNA. She is a professional coach with a rich history of playing and coaching. She played college hockey at Kent State University before moving home to Vancouver and taking up the sport in a coaching capacity. Since the moment she shifted full time into coaching, her life has revolved around the pitch. This role is a chance for her to take her contribution to the next level and have an even larger national impact.
“There is already a lot of amazing work being done in this area. I’m happy to be on board to help guide the progress. I know my impact won’t be limited to just one or two programs. I will work with coaching pathways, umpiring and officiating, school programs, high performance and more. I look forward to creating True Sport playbooks for our organization to grow.”
