Mid-game tallies lead BC to a 2-0 tournament winning performance
The format for this three-team tournament is a double round robin followed by a championship match. Meaning when the BC Rams took on Ontario in the gold medal match, it was the third time in three days that these two teams had squared off. The first match was a tie and Ontario defeated the Rams on Sunday night setting up a spicy Monday final.
The game was back and forth to start with neither team able to break the 0-0 deadlock. Both goalkeepers were stellar all game long as both teams threatened with PC efforts. In the 25th minute, Audrey Sawyers received a beautiful through-ball and smashed a forehand off the post and in, pushing the Rams into the lead. The Rams carried most of the play and Aerin Park was sparking in net when she needed to be.
Leina Dueck added the insurance marker in the 30th minute and the BC Rams never looked back. They closed the door and played out the rest of the game to 2-0 win and the gold medal. Both teams showed some incredible poise and play in the final but it was the Rams that capitalized on their chances.
Bubli Chohan, coach of the champion Rams, said that every year he coaches, the team and experience is a little bit different.
“I’ve known these girls for a long time, many of them since they were in U15s,” Chohan said. “It was a great final game and it was an amazing feeling winning a gold with them.”
He said the loss to Ontario on Sunday was a blessing in disguise and set them up nicely going into the finals.
“We won the one he had to,” he said. “The tie and the loss really added fuel to the fire and the girls didn’t want to lose again.”
The BC Rams are your U23 women’s division champions. The U18 division features nine teams and starts on Thursday July 4.
