Each Fall, the Coaching Association of Canada celebrates National Coaches Week. This is a time to recognize the positive impact coaches have on athletes and their communities across Canada. Each year Thousands of people across Canada, regardless of sport, take part in National Coaches week to say #ThanksCoach for the time, effort and generosity coaches dedicate to their sport and their athletes.

This year’s Coaches Week Event will be held From September 18-25, 2021.

Field Hockey Canada is excited to announce that in conjunction with National Coaches Week, we will be accepting nominations for the annual FHC Coaching Awards.

The 2021 Award categories are: 
Grassroots Coach Female
Grassroots Coach Male
Development Coach Female
Development Coach Male.

Winners and all nominees will be honoured on our website and social media channels throughout coaches week.

Award Criteria:  Grassroots Coach

A Grassroots coach is a coach that works with new players and those that wish to play at a recreational level. The coach that puts the fun into the game and inspires young athletes.

  • Criteria to nominate (Only nominees that meet all criteria as outlined in the nomination form will be considered)
    • A member of their respective PSO and an FHC Registered Participant (if coach is retired or deceased this requirement is waived)
    • Completed a minimum of 3 NCCP courses
    • Coached at the grass roots level for 10 years
    • Made an impact on their local field hockey community
  • The panel will consider the following when making their decision. The coach has
    • Helped established a club, high school program, league, or skills clinics
    • Ensured hockey for all in their community
    • Went above and beyond to engage and retain hockey players
    • Engaged in hockey in other ways such as board member, official, administrator

Award Criteria:  Development Coach

A Development Coach is a coach that has provided athletes with mentorship, skills and competitive experience to move from recreational level to competitive level. For example: club or high school athlete to provincial athlete, or, provincial athlete to nextgen or national team athlete

  • Criteria to nominate: (Only nominees that meet all criteria as outlined in the nomination form will be considered)
    • A member of their respective PSO and an FHC Registered Participant (if coach is retired or deceased this requirement is waived)
    • Completed a minimum of 6 NCCP courses including a minimum of 1 course at the Competition Development context
    • Coached at the development level for 5 years
    • Has had a minimum coached three athletes that have moved from recreation level to a provincial, nextgen or university sport context
  • The panel will consider the following when making their decision. The coach has:
    • Made an impact at the lives of the athletes they have coached and has gone above and beyond to help athletes become their best selves
    • Been the primary coach involved with supporting an athlete’s (or many athlete’s) development from recreational to competitive contexts.
    • Engaged in lifelong learning through education and mentorship.
    • Engaged in hockey in other ways such as board member, official, administrator

Nomination Process:

Coaches can be nominated by any FHC registered participant/ PSO Member, a club, or a PSO.

Please complete the appropriate digital application form. When submitting this form, you will be asked to upload Two reference letters from players, clubs, or other coaches in support of this nomination.
