Wednesday is a rest day for the teams ahead of the business end of the tournament when there’s all to play for in the quarter-finals on Thursday. The prize for the winners is a place in Saturday’s semi-finals with the sides already qualified for London 2012, Belgium and Argentina, facing the lesser-ranked Canada and Poland respectively. Eight-times former Olympic champions India meet Asian sub-continent rivals, Malaysia, with the hosts completing the line-up against Japan.
In the 20th minute, 18-year-old Gabriel Ho-Garcia scored the first goal of the match with a diving deflection – Ho-Garcia’s first goal for Canada.
Visiting Africa is a dream come true for Gonzalo Peillat from Argentina and Canada’s Gabriel Ho-Garcia, two of the youngest players in the Champions Challenge 1 in Johannesburg. Neither had played a senior international before arriving in the city and they share a common language – Spanish.
“It was great to score three goals – two of them field goals! It definitely gives us confidence going into our next match. Gabbar’s goal was one of the top three goals I have ever seen – it blew my mind!”
