Canada’s U18 Team Takes on Scottish and Welsh Junior Teams

The U18 team is led by head coach Chris Tyrrell, assistant coach Sofia Walia, Manager Rachel Spekking and overseen by NextGen Director Andrea Gibson. Although the team only returns five athletes from last year’s U18 National Team which toured and played France for an international series, it has been formed from a highly competitive and talented group of athletes. Additionally, a handful of athletes who have aged out of the U17 age group have been brought up into the squad have international experience playing in last year’s Netherlands tour and the 2022 U16 test-series versus the US.

Gibson who recently took over the NextGen Director position in September said “These tours are essential for our player performance pathway, as well as preparing our teams to transition into Junior squads and hopefully one day the Women’s National Team. The tours are an excellent chance for our athletes to work on individual & team development skills, while building the confidence to perform in high pressure international competition. It also gives us the opportunity to develop coach and management teams, while building and continuing the development of our Team Canada culture and hockey DNA throughout the pathway. As staff, we are very proud how the girls have performed in the first series against Scotland, and we are looking forward to our next 3 match series versus Wales this week.”

Canada has played two matches versus Scotland with Match 1 ending in a 2-0 loss and Match 2 in a 3-1 loss.

Head Coach, Tyrrell had the following to say about the first series “Playing Scotland’s Aspiring Junior team was a great experience that we have learnt so much from. The physicality and tempo posed a real challenge throughout the two games, and I could not be prouder of the way the players rose to meet it head on. Collectively and individually the match up has helped us improve while also giving us the confidence we need to push ourselves further. We are excited to continue that growth in our upcoming series against Wales.”

Canada will play Wales U18 next in a 3 match series in Cardiff at the National Sports Centre to conclude the tour prior to returning to Canada.
