Game 4 Report

 Thursday, April 7, 2011

The Canadians were able to capitalize early in the opening two minutes of the game to go ahead 1-0. The Chileans were transferring the ball in the backfield and great pressure up front by the scoring duo, Kate Gillis and Jessalyn Walkey. Walkey was able to steal the ball at the top of the circle and found herself walking in the circle alone and with great patience carried the ball past the goalie and flicked the ball high into the mesh. Walkey, tying Gillis now, with three goals in the series has shown great composure up front and the team is certainly glad to have her back! The game was mostly held between the two 25y lines with no penalty corners being awarded to either team. Chile had one near goal on a breakdown play that lead to a Chilean attacker with a wide open net but the ball was swept high and wide. Chilean midfielder, Daniela Infante was awarded a green card in the 33rd minute for talking back to the umpires.

Much of the same continued for the second half but Chile seemed to increase their pressure immensely. Canada seemed unable to handle the pressure at times but managed to cling to their 1-0 lead. A bout of cards were given in the second half including green cards to Steph Jameson (CAN, 42nd min) and Camila Caram (CHL, 64th min) as well as two yellow cards to Abigail Raye (CAN, 52nd min) and Gabriela Retamales (CHL, 46 min). Chile seemed to dominate the pressure during the second half with Canada conceding the only two penalty corners of the match toward the final minutes of the game. Chile was unable to capitalize on either of them to leave the final score at Canada 1 and Chile 0. Disappointed with their performance, Canada will take the win as a learning experience in preparation for their upcoming Champions Challenge II and Pan American Games and look forward to the final match of the series.
