Canada opened the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, with a convincing win over Barbados (10-0).
Canada took an early lead by Brienne STAIRS in the 5th minute and never looked back. In the 16th minute, Captain Katie BAKER entered the circle in decisive manner and unleashed a shot that left no chance to the Barbadian keeper. Thea CULLEY pushed the score to 3-0 on a penalty corner in the 20th minute. With Barbados unable to hold off the Canadian offense, Brienne STAIRS scored again to give Canada a four goal lead in the 26th minute. With two quick goals by Kate GILLIS and Hannah HAUGHN, Canada went ahead 6-0 with a few minutes remaining in the first half.
Canada maintained their offensive pressure in the second half. Diana ROEMER, then Brienne STAIRS (completing a hat-trick) gave Canada an 8-0 lead over Barbados. The Canadian player did not relax until the end and scored two more goals by Abigail RAYE in the 61st minute, then Thea CULLEY in the final minutes.
The Canadian Team, well adapted to the intense Mexican heat, circulating the ball well and showing great spirit, launched their Pan American campaign on a very positive note.
