Canadian Women’s U16 Junior National Camp

Field Hockey Canada is committed to having its Women’s program consistently qualify for major competitions such as the Olympic Games and the World Cup.  To ensure that this goal is reached, strategic importance has been placed on the establishment of a sustainable Junior National Team program peaking over 4 year cycles with participation in future Junior World Cups (JWC).  This U16 program would help develop and support both athletes and coaches capable of successfully meeting the demands of international level competition.


U16 Junior National Program Objectives:

1.    Identification of an initial talent pool of athletes from across the country

2.    Identification of a core group of HP coaches across the country to help train and develop the athletes

3.    Establishment of a technical and physiological plan leading to the 2017 JWC.

4.    Introduction to the methodology and tactics used in the Women’s National Team Programs. 


The first point of entry into the program will be an identification camp held in Vancouver from August 8th – 13th 2011.


Camp Summary:

•    Approximately 40 athletes (36 field players + 4 GK’s )

•    Each province will have the opportunity to nominate their top three athletes, while the remaining athletes will be identified at either the
U16 National Championships (August 3rd-7th, 2011) or other provincial training camps

•    Approximately 5-6 coaches identified by the national program and/ or nominated by the Provinces will be assigned coaching duties for the camp

•    Athletes will be staying on campus at the University of British Columbia

•    Organizing and funding travel to and from the camp will be the responsibility of the individual athlete

•    Athletic trainers/ therapists will be present for all practices and games


Camp Levy:

Each participating athlete will be assessed a camp levy of $500.  This will cover:

•    Accommodation from Aug 8th – Aug 13th

•    3 meals a day beginning with dinner on Aug 8th and running through to breakfast on Aug 13th.

•    Reversible Piny

•    Camp bag

Competition Details:

Athletes selected from the U16 Identification Camp will play a series of test matches against the USA in April 2012. Dates to be confirmed.


Provincial Responsibility – Athlete nominations

To assist with selection, provinces are required to nominate athletes prior to the start of each identification tournament

o    U16 athlete ( 1995 and under) nomination deadline:  Friday July 15th 2011


Provincial Responsibility – Coach Nominations

Provinces are also encouraged to nominate local High Performance coaches to attend/ participate in the camp.  Coaches can be nominated to fill an “observational” role or an “on-field” coaching role. 

Observing coaches within the program will be allowed to observe all team meetings, tactical sessions, practices, and games.

Coaches nominated to fill an on-field coaching role will need to be NCCP level 3 certified (or in process) and have demonstrated support of domestic high performance opportunities within their home province.  All nominated coaches will be required to cover all costs associated with travel, accommodation, and food at the camp.  Logistical assistance can be provided if required. 

One nominated on-field coach per province will be invited to attend the camp.  If space exists, provinces may be asked for additional coaching recommendations. 

Selected on-field coaches within the program can expect the following:

•    Participation as an assistant coach in all team meetings practices and games

•    Developing and implementing all or part of a practice plan designed to train identified team objectives

•    Orientation and training on the Sports Code video analysis software in addition to taping/ and or coding one game through the camp

•    Potential selection as a lead or assistant coach in an identified regional training center

•    Addition to the pool of identified national team coaches for future national team opportunity
