Chile takes Game 5 with 1-0 win over Canada

April 10, 2011 | Field Hockey Canada | fieldhockey.ca

Chile defeated Canada 1-0 in the final match of the 5-test series in Santiago, Chile. The rain held out for the final game at the Prince of Wales Country Club and although Canada started out very strong in the first 10 minutes of the game, it was Chile who managed to capitalize early and tie up the series. Each team finshed with two wins and a tie after 5 games. The Canadians seemed to put the pressure on themselves and were unable to capitalize in the attacking 25. Down a starting forward, the team lacked Kingston, ON native, Kate Gillis, who was unable to play after showing minor concussions symptoms from being hit with at stick on a follow through in the fourth game.

Playing against the same team in a series of multiple games can be very difficult but both teams showed different tactics each game and were able to take valuable learning experiences away. Both teams will be competing in Vienna, Austria May 9-14th at the Champions Challenge II, in opposite pools. Canada is very thankful for the hospitality of the Chilean Hockey Federation and are looking forward to facing Chile in competition in Vienna, later in the summer in Vancouver, as well as at the Pan American Games in October 2012.

The team would also like to thank the team manager, Katie Henhawk, for her incredible organization throughout the trip. The team had a very positive experience in Chile and will continue moving forward as the Pan American games draws closer.
