Indoor Women defeat Peru in opening match of Pan Am Championships

August 9, 2010

The Canadian Indoor National Women’s Team defeated Peru 4-0 Monday morning in their opening match of the 2010 Indoor Pan American Championships in Barquisimeto, Venezuela.

After dominating possession early, Canada’s Jessica Buttinger opened the game’s scoring in the 10th minute.  Peru countered with a penalty corner a minute later that was
blocked by Canadian goalkeeper Azelia Liu.  However, Canada continued to maintain
possession throughout the rest of the first half.  At the end of the
first half, the score remained 1-0 in favour of Canada.

In the opening
minute of the second half, Canada received a penalty corner which was converted by Amanda Woodcroft.  In the
29th minute, Canada took a 3-0 advantage on a field goal from Angela Lancaster.  Buttinger would score once again in the 33rd minute to make it 4-0
with six minutes remaining.  Peru’s defensive held strong to prevent
Canada from scoring further. And Canada comes away with their first win
in the tournament.

The Indoor Pan Am Championships serve as the continental qualifier to the 2011 Indoor World Cup.
