University of Maine field hockey standout Kelly Newton (Vancouver, BC) was recently named 2011 Female Athlete of the Year at the recent University of Maine Athletic Awards ceremony.
In her third year of competition, the speedy forward has helped push Maine to one of its best seasons in recent years. Newton led the team in scoring with 45 points this past season, which now puts her as the all time leading scorer with 112 points. She also led the America East Conference in Points, Points Per Game, Goals and Goals Per Game. But Newton’s statistics didn’t stop there. She ranked 10th in the nation for Points, 9th in Goals Per Game
Her honor is another one to add to the shelf this year for Newton. Earlier, she was named WomensFieldHockey.Com’s Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-American Third Team. Newton was also named a unanimous selection to the All-America East First Team and also voted America East Offensive Player of the Year.
