Not an easy Road to London for Canada

February 22, 2012 | Field Hockey Canada | fieldhockey.ca

After a tough 2 -3 loss to host India, the Canadian Men’s National Team is determined to defeat France in Friday’s match.  If Canada takes France, and pool-leader India defeats Poland – Team Canada could earn a spot in Sunday’s final match.  The winner will go home with a ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“I’m happy with parts of our performance but we cannot be satisfied with that game,” says Head Coach Robin D’Abreo. “Our focus will now shift to France as our next opponent.  They are a strong team and we will need to be at our best to secure a win.”

Despite a 1 – 0 win over Poland today, the Canadian Women’s National Team is no longer in the running for an Olympic berth.  After one win, one draw and two losses, Canada is fourth in the women’s pool.  They will face first place South Africa on Friday.

“We are obviously disappointed to lose the opportunity to qualify for London,” says Head Coach Louis Mendonca. “But we are still committed to finishing as high as possible in the tournament.  In today’s match we had great mental focus and we executed the game plan better than our last match.  We look forward to competing against South Africa.”
