The Men’s National Field Hockey Team has a new look. Eleven teammates are sporting (or doing their best to sport) moustaches this month, also known as Movember. They are sacrificing their upper lips in an effort to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer. Read on to find out why the men are growing “mos” and how you can get involved…
Why are you participating in Movember?
ST: It’s a fun away to support a great cause. My grandfather had prostate cancer, and most people have someone close to them who has been affected by the disease. So if I could help raise a few dollars, why not?
MP: It is an easy and visible way to help show your support and raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research. Also, it’s a good excuse to find out if I can actually grow a moustache.
PW: It’s a fun way for guys on our team to raise awareness for a great cause. Personally, I lost my grandfather to prostate cancer when I was quite young so I think it is important to try to raise awareness of the disease.
DJ: I am participating in Movember because it is a great way to raise awareness for prostate cancer… and because it is a great excuse to grow a moustache!
What’s it like having a moustache?
ST: A bit weird… I’ve never kept any facial hair because my growth is pretty limited, but it feels kind of funny. Thicker sauces tend to get stuck on my upper lip these days.
MP: So far there isn’t much going on on my top lip. I can’t really discuss this question just yet. Give me a couple more days.
PW: It’s a little different and very distracting. I’m not sure it’s the most flattering, but thankfully I have a very supportive girlfriend.
DJ: For the first few weeks you don’t really notice it is there except when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror. Then you are like, “Whoa, I have a moustache!” After a couple of weeks it gets noticeably longer and it gets itchy and food starts getting stuck in there. It is pretty funny.
How is the fundraising going, and how can fans support you?
ST: Not bad. I’ve had a few donations. Check out my mospace page and donate!
MP: I’ve heard we’re doing well – click here to donate on behalf of the Canadian Men’s Field Hockey Team.
PW: Off to a bit of a slow start but I expect that will change now that my mo is gaining some density. You can check it out and support me on my mospace.
DJ: My fundraising efforts have not been going so well. I believe I have received $10 so far. I can use all the help I can get! You can follow the progress of my mo and donate on my mospace.
The men will continue to grow their moustaches as they compete in the FIH Champions Challenge 1 in Johannesburg, South Africa from November 26 to December 4.
