Women finish 5th, men to play for 3rd

Yesterday was the final day of pool play at the FIH Road to London in New Delhi.  While the men’s match between Canada and France ended in a 1 -1 draw, it was not enough to give Canada a spot in Sunday’s final match.  The Men’s National Team will compete for 3rd place against Poland on Sunday at 17:30 (4:00am PST, 7:00am EST).  Iain Smythe of Vancouver scored the lone goal for Canada. Click here for match details and photos.

“Our performance today was not deserving of a win,” says Men’s Head Coach Robin D’Abreo. “It’s a tough lesson to learn with so much on the line.  Our goal is no longer within reach, but there is still much at stake.  Our only focus now will be to regroup and perform against Poland.”

The Canadian women’s side finished 5th in the FIH Road to London, after a 3 – 0 win over Poland today.  Thea Culley (Rossland, BC), Brienne Stairs (Kitchener) and Stephanie Jameson (Vancouver) scored today’s goals – Culley was named player of the match.  Click here for match details and photos.

Although Team Canada will go home without tickets to London, they will go home with new goals for the future.  The 2015 Pan American Games are in Toronto – and the National Teams are preparing to perform well at home.  Beyond that, Canada is committed to doing whatever it takes to make it to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
