August 13, 2010

The first match on the last day of pool play was between Uruguay and Canada; the two top positions in Pool A.

The match began with Canada having more possession of the ball. In the 7th minute, the first penalty corner of the match was awarded to Canada. Canada’s initial shot was blocked by a Uruguay defender; that resulted in a penalty stroke. Kristen SHIER scored the penalty stroke to give Canada the 1-0 lead over Uruguay. In the 13th minute, Uruguay received their first penalty corner of the match, but the shot was blocked by Canada’s Ali LEE. Four minutes later, Uruguay was awarded another penalty corner from which Camila DE MARIA scored to tie the match 1-1. With no time remaining in the first half, Uruguay had a chance to take the lead, but Carolina MUTILVA’s shot was again blocked by LEE; keeping the halftime score at 1-1.

A couple minutes into the second half, Jessica BUTTINGER gave Canada a 2-1 lead over Uruguay from a push at the top of the circle. Uruguay countered with two penalty corners, but could not convert. In the 30th minute, Uruguay’s Isabel OLASO tied the match 2-2. Right after, Canada was awarded a penalty corner, but LEE’s shot went high above the goal. Uruguay countered and received their own penalty corner; and MUTILVA’s shot gave Uruguay their first lead of the match at 3-2. With three minutes remaining in the match, Canada’s Angela LANCASTER received a yellow card. In the last minute, Canada substituted their keeper for a kicking back, but Uruguay held on for the 3-2 victory and kept its top spot in Pool A.
