Dorothy ‘Dot’ Asuma – Read Obituary
October 26, 1930 – October 2, 2021
Field Hockey Canada was saddened to learn of the passing of Dorothy ‘Dot’ Asuma last week. Dot was an inspiration to the Canadian field hockey community. Field Hockey Canada and the extended hockey family offers our condolences to the entire Asuma family at this time.
Dot paved the way for international women’s field hockey in Canada and for her contributions and dedications to the sport, was inducted into the Field Hockey Canada Hall of Fame in the Builder’s Category in the class of 2019.
Dot was instrumental in bringing international women’s field hockey to Canada in the 1970s. When the IFWHA Women’s World Championships was announced to be held in Vancouver in 1979, the natural choice was to make Asuma the Chair of the organizing committee for the tournament. She convinced Canada and the International Field Hockey world that Canada can host a major Field Hockey Tournament.
Field hockey brings people together and Asuma said that’s what made her fall in love with the game. She was an integral part of the Canadian field hockey community and will be remembered with love. Our thoughts are with Dot’s family and friends at this time.
