Field Hockey Canada announces roster for Sultan of Johor Cup in October

Men’s Junior National team will travel to Malaysia for preparation tournament

Field Hockey Canada is excited to announce the U21 Men’s Junior Team roster that will travel to Malaysia for the Sultan of Johor Cup. The tournament will take place in Johor, Malaysia from October 17-24. 2026.

The roster is comprised of returners from the 2026 Junior Pan American Championships and an addition of NextGen talent from across the country. Mark Egner is the Pathway Technical Lead and speaks to the program as a whole in advance of the tournament.

“Seeing this group compete at Junior Pan-Ams to earn their Junior World Cup bid, I’m excited about the potential within the men’s pathway,” he said. “As this group prepares for their Junior World Cup in 2027, this tournament provides great opportunities for our players to test themselves against other nations and refine our style of play. The Men’s NextGen program is expanding, with more athletes in the pathway we have increased competition for spots, all of which will strengthen our Junior World Cup preparation and potentially establish the foundations of future generations of the Red Caribou,” Egner said.

For program head coach, Geoff Matthews, this tournament sets the team up nicely to build into 2027. Although Matthews won’t be touring with the team this fall, he said this is a great opportunity to get quality competition and start the year-long building process to the World Cup.

“The Sultan of Johor Cup is an important part of the team preparation for the Junior World Cup. Opportunities to play meaningful international matches at this age are incredibly valuable, and this tournament gives our athletes the chance to experience the intensity, pressure and demands that come with tournament hockey, Matthews said. “Most importantly, it gives this group another opportunity to learn how to compete together. We want to come away from Johor with a much clearer understanding of where we are, what our strengths are, and what we need to improve over the next 12 months to be ready for the Junior World Cup.”
