Special Recognition

Barb Carmichael –

Barb Carmichael is a true pillar of the field hockey community in Prince Edward Island and beyond. Her decades-long dedication as an athlete, coach, leader, and advocate have shaped the sport’s landscape across the Atlantic region. Representing PEI at the Canada Games in 1969 and 1973, and competing with the UNB Varsity Red Sticks, Barb’s athletic achievements laid the foundation for a lifetime of service. As a coach, she led provincial teams to national success, earning the Sport PEI Coach of the Year award in 1983. Off the field, Barb has been the heart of Field Hockey PEI, serving as its president since inception and as PEISAA Field Hockey Commissioner since 1999. Her tireless efforts as UPEI team manager since 2002 and her recent induction into the PEI Sports Hall of Fame’s Builder Category in 2025 reflect her lasting impact. Barb’s leadership was instrumental in launching the U SPORTS Invitational Field Hockey Championships in 2024, bringing Atlantic university teams back into national competition. Her unwavering commitment has empowered generations of athletes, coaches, and officials. As many have said, “You can never say no to Barb Carmichael”—a testament to her passion and influence. Thank you, Barb, for everything you’ve done and continue to do.
