Men’s Commonwealth Blog: Day 5

October 3, 2010

Hey there Family, Friends and Field Hockey Fans,

Today started off as usual with an early wakeup followed by breakfast, but unfortunately our table was thinned out a bit due to a couple of the boys being a little under the weather.  Nonetheless, there was a definite added buzz in the air as we were all anticipating the festivities surrounding the opening ceremonies and were hopeful that the whole team would be feeling better by the evening…

Men’s Commonwealth Blog: Day 4

October 2, 2010

Today we had one of the longest days we have had since we got here. We started off bright and early with an 8 am wake up call and then a nice breakfast followed by a trip to the field for our practice. Today we had a special treat; practice at the training venue (Yumana Sport Complex) instead of the competition venue. It was incredibly hot at the start of our 10:00am training session and there were only three umbrellas protecting us from the hot Delhi sun…

The Canadian women’s field hockey team narrowly lost their first match at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi against Malaysia, a team ranked 3 spots behind them in the World Rankings.

After a hesitant start by both teams, Malaysia had the first opportunity of the game on a high ball bouncing weirdly in the circle that the Canadian defense had trouble…

October 1, 2010

We kicked off today with a jog and stretch around the inside perimeter of the Athlete’s Village, as we had an exhibition game against Malaysia later in the day and needed to get the legs firing.  After a quick shower to freshen up it was off the dining hall.  The meal of choice for the day was cereal and toast mostly b/c the line up for eggs, bacon, beans, and hashbrowns was about 10 minutes long.  After steering clear of the Mango Cornflakes, I went with the regular Cornflakes mixed with chocolate Milo flakes…

The team is now settling into the athlete’s village, and making good use of it’s facilities. For meals, the team will head down to the dining hall that has an assortment of delicious food, which will satisfy any hungry athlete. The food offered ranges from Asian, Western, Indian, African food, all the way to simple salads, pizza, and pasta. Once we have had our fill, we keep our selves busy with many other things. On Wednesday afternoon, most of the team engaged in an exciting and heart-pumping croquet match! The pairing of Philip Wright and Richard Hildreth set off on a daring pace and pulled away with the victory…

The Commonwealth Games experiences for Canada  have been very positive and with our final arrival of Mathew Guest early Wednesday morning our Canadian team is now complete. We had our first training session Tuesday afternoon and every player was itching to start preparing in New Delhi. Our confidence is high and Canada looked better then expected and we will only get better throughout this competition.

With an early rise Wednesday morning the team met for a light jog and stretch in preparation for Canada’s first exhibition game against Scotland…
