In the heart of Muscat, Oman, the stage is set for the Men’s Hockey Olympic Qualifier tournament, that kicks off on January 15, 2024. The 17th world-ranked Canadian Red Caribou aim to secure a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Eight top ranked teams, including Canada, will vie for the top three positions that guarantee a ticket to the Olympic stage in Paris. Canada earned their spot in the FIH Olympic Qualifier tournament by defeating USA and winning the bronze medal at the Pan American Championships in Santiago just over a month ago.
All tournament matches will be available on FIH Watch.Hockey. The FIH is currently offering the FIH+ Pass, which gives you access to all Junior World Cup matches for the men’s and women’s tournament as well as all men’s and women’s Olympic Qualifiers. By purchasing this package, you’ll have access to all of Team Canada’s matches for the next four events. Learn more and purchase here.
Six teams have already automatically qualified for the Olympic Games, by way of winning their respective continental qualifiers — Argentina (Pan Am), India (Asia), South Africa (Africa), Australia (Oceania), Netherlands (Europe), France (Host Nation). Simultaneous to this event, there is an identical qualifier event in Valencia, Spain with eight other teams vying for three spots. Canada has been put in a group alongside Chile(22), Germany(5), and New Zealand(11). The top two teams from each pool will advance to the semifinals, keeping their Olympic dreams alive, while the bottom two will be eliminated, and play for consolation placement in subsequent matches. This tournament marks Canada’s final opportunity to secure an Olympic bid. The stakes are high, and the pressure is on as only the top three from each event will join the six already qualified teams.
Canada’s men’s national team is no stranger to the Olympic stage, having qualified for the previous two Games (Tokyo 2020 and Rio 2016). Fresh off a bronze triumph at the Pan American Games, where they bested the USA in an exciting bronze medal match, the team is riding a wave of momentum and critical experience. The squad, a blend of experience and youth, has been preparing for this moment for over a year. The Pan American Games served as a crucial learning curve for several athletes, marking their initiation into major competitions.
The Canadian field hockey community will have lots to cheer for in the middle of January, as both the men’s and women’s national team play in respective qualifiers. The men’s national team will centralize for carding camp November 20-25 and continue centralized training up until the tournament in Oman. Roster announcements and other information will be available in the middle of December.
