Men’s Commonwealth Blog: Day 8

October 6, 2010

After a disappointing loss vs. the South Africans, we had a bit of a sleep in before a 10 am breakfast. The mood is ok after the match, obviously some disappointment, but the guys recognize that we need to move forward and focus ourselves on the next task, taking on the English.

The boys took to the pool today for a chance to get the legs flushed out as well as have some fun. Pearson put together a make-shift cricket ground and took on the task of wicket keeper (he stood behind the garbage can), and boys were hitting for 4’s and 6’s, catching the attention of the Indian workers who were much more interested in our game than the task they were actually supposed to be attending to…

Canadian Men Battle To A 1 – 1 Draw With England

October 7, 2010

The Canadian men’s field hockey team had a strong performance to hold England to a 1-1 draw, in front of a boisterous audience enjoying the exciting match. England is ranked fourth in the World and second in these Commonwealth Games.

Canada started cautiously and England nearly opened the scoring early on a ball mishandled by the defense, but Mark PEARSON soon forced a penalty-corner after a long solitary run. The ball went in goal, triggering a huge roar from the crowd, but it was denied by the umpire…

Men’s Commonwealth Blog: Day 7

October 6, 2010

Today was a big day for the men’s team because we were kicking off our Commonwealth games campaign against South Africa. We awoke in the morning for a jog and stretch to get our legs moving in preparation for the match, unfortunately two of the athletes were still under the weather and were not able to join the group. The weather this morning was already warming up and the day did not look like it was going to cool down for our 14:30 game…

England beats Women's National Team

Women’s Hockey team fares well against top-ranked England

October 6, 2010

The Canadian women’s field hockey team produced a strong effort against the top-ranked English team, scoring the first goal to finally lose 1-4. England finished on the podium of the World Cup, played mid-September in Argentina, and is widely favourite to win the gold here in Delhi.

England started at full speed and Canadian goal-keeper Azelia LIU was called into action twice in the first minute of play, but it is Canada who drew first blood, forcing a penalty-stroke in the 4th minute on a decisive effort by Kate GILLIS…

Canadian Men Lose At Commonwealth

Canadian Men Lose To South Africa At Commonwealth

October 5, 2010

The Canadian men’s field hockey team suffered a loss (1-4) against South Africa in their first match at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, under the interested eyes of Minister of Sport Gary Lunn.

The games between the two countries have been spirited affairs in the last few years, and this one was no exception, despite the intense heat of the early afternoon. The match began as a fierce battle in midfield, with neither team giving up an inch and few opportunities to approach the goals…

Men’s Commonwealth Blog: Day 6

October 4, 2010

After a long night Sunday at the opening ceremonies, Coach D’Abreo made arguably his best move in his time as National Coach, a schedule change for a sleep-in and a late breakfast, just what the boys were looking for! A long rest was needed for most of us and it was well appreciated when we rendezvoused for breakfast at 10 am. After a good meal and a few coffees, the team broke up to pass time until our next event, some members electing to shoot some pool, others taking in the Games’ first events on TV, and some just scouring the internet trying to find pictures of themselves at Opening…

Men’s Commonwealth Blog: Day 5

October 3, 2010

Hey there Family, Friends and Field Hockey Fans,

Today started off as usual with an early wakeup followed by breakfast, but unfortunately our table was thinned out a bit due to a couple of the boys being a little under the weather.  Nonetheless, there was a definite added buzz in the air as we were all anticipating the festivities surrounding the opening ceremonies and were hopeful that the whole team would be feeling better by the evening…

Men’s Commonwealth Blog: Day 4

October 2, 2010

Today we had one of the longest days we have had since we got here. We started off bright and early with an 8 am wake up call and then a nice breakfast followed by a trip to the field for our practice. Today we had a special treat; practice at the training venue (Yumana Sport Complex) instead of the competition venue. It was incredibly hot at the start of our 10:00am training session and there were only three umbrellas protecting us from the hot Delhi sun…

The Canadian women’s field hockey team narrowly lost their first match at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi against Malaysia, a team ranked 3 spots behind them in the World Rankings.

After a hesitant start by both teams, Malaysia had the first opportunity of the game on a high ball bouncing weirdly in the circle that the Canadian defense had trouble…
