U Sports Advisory Committee Q & A
1. What is the purpose of the USport Advisory Committee?
The committee helps guide FHC leadership in the discussion of university sport and its importance in the areas of athlete, coach and official development in Canada. As well, the committee is an advocate for the preservation and expansion of field hockey in university in Canada. Lastly the committee reviews the details of the U Sport model to assess opportunities to create the optimal competitive model for university field hockey across Canada.
2. Who is involved on the Committee and what roles or responsibilities do they have?
The committee is chaired by Nancy and Deb as appointed by the FHC Board of Directors and is fortunate to have membership from representatives from universities across the country including those involved in shaping U Sports.
3. What are the daily or monthly tasks associated with being a committee member?
The committee meets as often as necessary recognizing that August – November is a busy time for University field hockey coaches and Athletic Directors.
4. How does the Committee work with the greater U Sports organization?
The co-chairs as well as the CEO of FHC and Athletic Directors have been in regular communication with representatives of U Sport to ensure all are aware of the commitment to the preservation and expansion of field hockey in universities across Canada.
5. How does high school hockey feed into the U Sport programming? What is their correlation and/or similar pathways?
High school hockey plays an integral role in supporting a pathway for field hockey players to enter U Sport. High School student-athletes who wish to pursue field hockey at a University level have the opportunity to see a pathway from high school to university as a result of the connections University field hockey coaches have with high school and provincial organizations across Canada. FHC looks for ways to continue to support this pathway.
6. What are the main goals of the Committee moving forward?
The Field Hockey Canada USports Steering Committee’s 3 main goals are to guide FHC in the leadership of the future direction of USports, make recommendations to the FHC Board and advocate, support, pursue and create the optimal competitive model for university field hockey in collaboration with Universities and Colleges across Canada.
7. What challenges does the Committee face?
The committee has recognized that the sport of field hockey in Universities throughout Canada have different needs, challenges and goals, but the committee has also recognized the power of diversity, sustainability and collaboration. The committee is committed to working through the challenges in order for Field Hockey in Canada to grow.
