FHC and Women’s Athletes thank CAN Fund for financial support

Field Hockey Canada and the National Women’s Field Hockey Team would like to thank the Canadian Athletes Now Fund (CAN Fund) for their financial contribution to five women’s team members on their Summer 2010 Athlete Recipient list.

CAN Fund is a not for profit organization devoted solely to raising funds and awareness for Canadian athletes.  It has raised over $11 million, and directly supports hundreds of Canadian athletes from coast to coast…

Wayne Fernandes, a veteran of the Men’s National Team, has decided to hang up his cleats and put away his stick.  After 14 years with the Senior National Team, Wayne is beginning a new chapter in his life.  He has been an integral part of the team’s success and his “retirement will definitely leave a hole in the squad” says Louis Mendonca…

The Canadian junior men’s national team wrapped up their four-match series with the United States on Sunday, August 15th.  The Canadians finished with an impressive record of two wins, one loss, and one draw.

The series immediately followed the conclusion of a national camp for athletes identified for possible inclusion on the squad leading up to the 2013 Junior World Cup…

OTTAWA – Field Hockey Canada and Commonwealth Games Canada today announced the 16 athletes who will represent Canada at the XIXth Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India this October.

The field hockey competition is traditionally strong at the Commonwealth Games. Seven of the ten men’s teams that qualified for Delhi also competed at this year’s World Cup.

“We have had significant turnover in our men’s national team since the World Cup in March with five retiring players,” said Hari Kant, Men’s High Performance Director for Field Hockey Canada…

The men’s final between Canada and the US started with a bang as the US conceded a penalty corner in the first minute. US goalkeeper Jason WELLINGS did well to smother Jonathan ROBERT’s initial drag-flick, but obstructed for another PC. This time Jonathan played the option pass through his legs to Adam ALI who scored with a powerful, low shot. The celebrations had not died down for the Canadian team when a fortunate bounce enabled Pat HARRIS to tap in at the back post for the USA…

The first match on the last day of pool play was between Uruguay and Canada; the two top positions in Pool A.

The match began with Canada having more possession of the ball. In the 7th minute, the first penalty corner of the match was awarded to Canada. Canada’s initial shot was blocked by a Uruguay defender; that resulted in a penalty stroke. Kristen SHIER scored the penalty stroke to give Canada the 1-0 lead over Uruguay. In the 13th minute, Uruguay received their first penalty corner of the match, but the shot was blocked by Canada’s Ali LEE…
