CIS Women’s Championship Day 1

November 6, 2009

The CIS Women’s Field Hockey Championship kicked off yesterday with some great matches being played by all teams in the tournament. The championship tournament will continue on until November 8th at the University of Victoria. The teams in the tournament include:

1. Guelph Gryphons (OUA champions)

2. UBC Thunderbirds (Canada West champions)

3. Victoria Vikes (second place Canada West)

4. Toronto Varsity Blues (OUA finalists)

5. Alberta Pandas (third place Canada West)

Game 1: The first game of the tournament featured the top seeded Guelph Gryphons facing off against the No. 2 ranked UBC Thunderbirds. The result was UBC 3 and the Guelph Gryphons 1; this was Guelph’s first loss of the season. What a great way to start off the tournament.

Game 2: The second match of the day paired up the Toronto Varsity Blues against the defending champions Victoria Vikes. With a great game played by both teams, the outcome was Victoria edging out Toronto by a score of 1 – 0. This is the second consecutive year the Vikes have defeated Toronto on opening day. Toronto’s day was not done there, later they would be playing the tough UBC Thunderbirds.

Game 3: The third game of the day once again featured the UBC Thunderbirds playing the Alberta Pandas. Like the first game, the UBC Thunderbirds came out on top by a score of 3 – 1 increasing their record to 2 – 0 in this short lived tournament.

Game 4: In the last match of the day, the Guelph Gryphons played the Toronto Varsity Blues. Both teams have already previously played in the morning so they were all warmed up and ready to go. The Guelph Gryphons defeated Toronto by the score of 5 – 2 and improved their record to 1 – 1 while Toronto falls to 0 – 2. Both teams will enjoy today as Victoria will be the only team that has to play twice.
